Clothing during this
period, as in any period, reflected the social status of the person.
Clothing was an indication
of wealth and a persons place in the "pecking order". There could
be no doubt who was nobility, who was a craftsman, a merchant
or common worker.
Peasant woman wore
long-sleeved blouses and at least two skirts. Interesting that
she usually wore her newest skirt on top over the underskirts.
She would tuck the outer skirt up to keep it out of the dirt.
She may have worn an apron as well to help keep the skirts clean
when working.
Over her blouse she
wore a tight fitting bodice or vest which was straight or sometimes
came to a point in front. It was laced or buttoned up the front.
